Iconic Donny band COIL launches new album, COLD TRUTH

Doncaster Rock Band COIL celebrate the release of their new album COLD TRUTH with a launch event at The Leopard on Saturday 24th March.

It is 37 years since the band released their first album BLOOD MONEY – on vinyl, of course! They were in the early ‘80’s vanguard of a purple patch for Doncaster bands that featured The Uncool Dance Band, The Gents and the Shy Tots. The album received a rave review from Melody Maker and its reception led to a national support tour of major venues and airplay on Radio 1.

” Refreshing tasteful, great, from the songs, the arrangements, the production, the playing all the way to the sleeve.. Coil up with this. (Trevor Morris, ‘Melody Maker’ 1981)

They split in 1983 – musical differences, broken dreams etc – and did not communicate for the best part of 30 years. But a combination of circumstance and social media put them back in touch in time to forgive, forget, re-bond and rehearse to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of that album. Mick Jenkinson (guitars and vocals), Kev Fitzpatrick (guitars and vocals), Mick Phillipson (bass and vocals) and John Wilson (percussion) celebrated with a ‘comeback’ concert at The Salutation, just a few hundred yards from the former Rockingham Arms, where they’d played their debut back in ‘79.

That reunion served to remind the band members of their unspoken bond forged from survival, friendship and a common love of the sounds they produce. The reformed Coil did not set out with any ambition other than to share some wine and cheese and to make music for their own pleasure; when the occasional gig came along it was a bonus, a way of keeping focussed. Then something happened…..

Kev Fitzpatrick and Mick Jenkinson had always written songs for the band and began tentatively to record both old and new ones for posterity. One song, Guardian Angel, was videoed by Sheffield filmmaker, Nathan Seedhouse and picked up an award at the prestigious South Yorkshire Filmmakers ‘2Weeks2MakeIt’ festival in 2014. BBC Radio Sheffield began to play the new songs, and at some point, in 2017, the idea of recording a second Coil album became blindingly obvious. So here you have it….. and that’s the COLD TRUTH.
